Abuja, Jan. 21, 2025 (NAN) No fewer than 3,000 Secondary School students in Gombe State were excited to witness the opening ceremony of the 2025 Gombe Inter Schools Athletics and Principal Cup football competition which commenced early Tuesday at the Pantami Township Stadium, Gombe State.
The students who represented their various schools at the opening ceremony were excited as many of them had not visited the stadium in their lives.
More than 25 private schools, including 40 public schools participated in the match past that lasted for almost an hour.
Government Senior Secondary School Bolari East won the match past and went home with N100,000 cash handed over to the school’s games master.
Aside the students in attendance, State Commissioner of Education, Dr Aishatu Umar Maigari led the other dignitaries to participate in the official kick off of the Gombe State Principal Cup.
The opening football match was between Government Day Junior Secondary School and Savannah Group of Schools.
As at the time of filing this report, Savanah Group of Schools led by a lone goal which remained that way till the end of the game as the stadium filled to capacity against Government Day Junior secondary school.
Some dignitaries who came from other states were also in attendance to witness the glamorous and colourful opening ceremony.
Other events would hold later today in the track and field, such as 100m, 200m, Javelin and high jump in boys and girls categories.
Director General of the competition, Hon Ahmed Gara Gombe expressed his heartfelt gratitude to God for the success of the opening ceremony and urged the participants to see the athletics championship and principal cup as a platform to showcase their talents to the world.
He also thanked the media for their unwavering support given to the tourney, noting that without media coverage, the event would not have recorded a huge success on day one of the tournament.(NAN)
